A.H. Peppercorn may have been best known for his large Pacifics, but it was his mixed-traffic K1 class which would last right up to the end of steam on the North Eastern and Scottish regions of British Rail. Your writer recorded them in 1966 and 1967 hauling coal trains in the Fife coalfields, as well as working a variety of traffic on the Durham coast mainline. One visit to Ryhope Colliery near Sunderland allowed your writer to observe no less than four of these robust machines in action there. His best memory was watching a member of the class shunting at Market Weighton in the old East Riding of Yorkshire. On occasions when the locomotive came past him, the driver would throw him a packet of Spangles - tasty soft fruit sweets. Drivers did that sort of thing in those days.
